Selfish Ignorance Is Bliss
I went to the movies yesterday and they showed the trailer for Hotel Rwanda during the previews. It almost made me cry to imagine the sh!t that goes on in this world and the pain and suffering that so many have to indure.
I wont go to watch it.
Even though I know its important to be enlightened these things depress me. I would rather go about my everyday life in ignorance than to have the burden of other's sorrows on my shoulders. Especially when I feel helpless to do anything about it. It is so incredibly selfish of me and thats NOT how my mother raised me but thats how I honestly feel.
That's why I like romance novels and I refuse to read non-fiction. Thats why I look the other way when I see stray dogs on the road and homeless people sleeping on the sidewalk. That's why I spend my days watching MTV and partaking in other mindless entertainment.
And thats why Im called naive and immature.
And I will continue to be as shallow as a toddler's wading pool until I stretch my mind to include the reality of this screwed up world that exists beyond my inane but privileged existence. Where my biggest upset is not looking as cute as I would like in a pair of jeans.
I pray that I snap out of this one day soon. And who knows, maybe I can be another Paul Rusesabagina and make a difference in someone's life.
